About Science OlympiadScience Olympiad is an international non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of regional, state and national tournaments. Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of team events, which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology.

Overview of Huron Science OlympiadWe are a student-led and student-run team at Huron High School, focused on learning a variety of science topics and engineering skills and competing against teams at the regional, invitational, and state levels. We are the largest science-oriented team in our High School, with two teams of fifteen students. Science Olympiad is a team effort, requiring commitment and preparation similar to that among sports teams and encouraging group learning and teamwork. We compete at several invitational tournaments and the regional competition each year.
Team StructureOur team is made up of two teams, a first team and a second team, and a handful of alternates. There are fifteen students on each team, and around five alternates, including members of all grades. In addition, there are student "Event Leaders" for each of the 23 events in Science Olympiad, who organize study sessions and find study material for their events during the preseason. The team is led by a board, composed of two co-captains, a secretary, and a treasurer.
Anybody can come join Science Olympiad in the beginning of the school year, but unfortunately, we have to make cuts once the competition season starts. Teams are selected based on merit around October, although changes can, and probably will be made to teams throughout the year. Competitions last from December until (hopefully) May. |
